"Hello there, I have submitted these two photos of my family members. This is the first roll from my new Minolta Maxxum 300 si My first SLR camera. Please point me in the right direction." Mike Alleman, Lake Charles, LA.

This is a fine bold close-up with the background pleasantly out of focus. But the sun glasses conceal the eyes! There's also a slight distraction bottom left of the picture.
Woman's face
Woman's face off-centred
It's often more interesting to have the subject a bit off-centre as suggested here. Even more of a pity about that distraction on the bottom left, though!
Small boy in tree
He's a bit lost in a not very interesting landscape that's also rather over-exposed.
Closer view of boy in tree
It is better to move in closer. This concentrates attention on where you want it, and also conveniently conceals the too light background! This makes a very effective photograph.
