| with comments from Philip Grosset "Hello the background on this picture is very simple. I used a minolta dimage 1500 digital camera. I used full zoom, but did crop it down some more being i thought it would focus more on the baby. I just loved the shot of him playing with the water I only wish he had looked at the camera. Love to see if there is any improvments I can make." (Michelle Watts, Dallas, Texas) |

| You were wise to crop your photo (on the left), but I'd crop out the edges of the picture too, as I've done on the right, unless you have some special reason for wanting a square format. The more conventional shape looks more pleasing, I think, and concentrates attention on where you want it. It might have been better still if you'd crouched down so that the boy's hand and the water were in the immediate foreground, and you were looking up at the boy's face behind it. You would have seen more of his face that way. It's usually better looking up at children than down at them. It's a pleasing picture. Reply from Michelle Watts: "Thank you so very much for helpful hints. And the crop size does look much better the way you did it. I will use your tips for my next photos thanks so much for your advise and for honesty." "Hi Philip I'm so happy I found your webpage again!! Ive sent you things before and loved your input can you please help me on these they where taken in Mexico with a Nikon N70 Thanks once again for your time" (Karen, Colorado) |

| You sent me four very colorful photos, but, as I've previously commented on three, I can only add one more here. I like your parrot picture on the left. It is bold and bright and stands out from the background, although it might have been better still if it could have been shown clear of the branch behind the top of its head. But why frame it right in the middle of the picture? On the right, I've tried coming in closer and moving it off centre. It makes an arresting picture. By the way, I'm still asking for people to send me their full names when submitting pictures. | |||||||||||||||||
"Great website. I would appreciate your comments on the photos I took whilst on hoilday last year in South America. The first is of a land iguana on the South Plaza Island, Galapagos Island and the second is of a church in a village in Northern Chile I took then with - Samsung Fino 105. I have since bought a Canon EOS 300 for my travels to Central America this year. Any tips? Sorry about the size!! Thanks." ( Maureen Walker, London, England) |

| Your photo on the left looks fine to me, but you don't really need the empty space above the iguana, so on the right I've (as always!) moved a bit closer in, but I've left in all the space below it so we can still get a good idea of its location. |

| This photo is most attractively composed with the arch providing really effective foreground framing, and there's a most effective contrast between the black of the arch and the white of the church. And you've even got the tower at the intersection of thirds! It's a very striking picture, although I'm left wondering whether the inclusion of a few local people mught have made it even more appealing. And, to be ultra fussy, there's a little white speck two thirds of the way up the picture on the right that could well be removed - but perhaps that just appeared during scanning. Reply from Maureen Walker: "Thank you for responding so quickly to my photos and for your kind words of advice. Your website is very inspiring! Thank you for taking the time." |
