with comments from Philip Grosset "Hi, I sent a couple of these photos in back in February, but they have not been on your site, and you had been having computer problems, so I hope I have not overstepped by re-sending them. The first picture was taken while my 2 yr old, Joey, was playing in the barn. He climbed up on a bale of hay and sat down to rest, so even though this looks posed, it isn't-I couldn't pose him if I tried! I was not aware of the glare from a small window until I started the editing process on my computer, and I am not sure how to get rid of it. This pic was taken with my Kodak digital DC 210 plus. The second picture, "My 3 sons in a tub", was taken again with the digital Kodak. I try in every shot I take, to only include the subject(s) and not a lot of background. I am a sucker for close ups. But I obviously got a bit of a fuzziness on the baby in this one-they were not all equal distance from the camera. The third picture is VERY edited-sharpened, brightened, and reversed. The original was very blurry, I suppose because of it being an action shot, and my limited knowledge! This is my daughter Kaci, on her horse Ginger, taking her first jump. I know it is not sharp, but I can't figure out how to make it clearer-I should have used a better camera, this was the digital also, but I didn't get a good camera until later. This scanned image is my daughter Missy-one of those candid "hey Missy, look this way" sort of things. She will not ever let me take her photo, so I was especially pleased that this one turned out so well. This was taken with my new Nikon N60 that I got for Christmas. I know the background is busy, and the snowman pillow is a distraction at the top of her head, but for the first roll of film with my new camera, I still liked it. Please tell me what you think. I have 8 children, so I mostly take childish pictures, but my interest is in doing our own portraits. I love finding what makes a great picture-even though I don't always get it! I am fixing to take a photography course to learn about lighting, settings, and all the things my camera will do for me. Thanks for your input." (Shari Trowbridge)

On the left: your very pleasing photo, although I'd have been inclined to have left more space in front of him, as on the right. I've removed the patch of distracting sunlight on his shoulder by using the cloning tool in Photoshop. Only easy if you've got a suitable edit imaging program! The barn setting adds immensely to the picture's appeal.

Another happy picture. If you'd focused on the boy in the middle, more of the picture might have been sharper. Usually try to focus a third of the way into the area you want to be in focus. | |||||||||||||||||

You managed to sharpen your picture (on the left) very well, but I think I'd have preferred to leave more room in front of the horse than behind it, as on the right. One way of getting a sharp picture of a moving object is to pan with it, and let the background come out blurred. But this needs quite a lot of practice!

You could remove some of the distracting background from your picture on the left, by coming in closer and moving to a vertical format, as on the right. Altogether a very lively set of pictures. You've certainly no shortage of subjects!
