"Hi Philip, Please find enclosed two photos taken by my wife Shermaine of our daughter Cameron -Rose. Shermaine is currently undertaking a City and Guilds course in photography and would appreciate any help/advise both on these photos and any other points you care to comment on which may be relevant to the course. Also, please note that as a theme she has chosen to do Huntingdonshire for her colour portfolio, so any advice for historical/interesting subjects to photograph would also be appreciated. Many thanks, Dave." (Dave Neal)

Girl's face
These photos are really fun, and you've got in fine and close, but I'm left wondering what caused all the mess! Might it have been possible for us to see what she was actually eating? It's a good idea looking up at children from slightly below them, but here the low angle is perhaps a bit too extreme as it produces a distorted effect. I'm sure you meant to emphasise the child's mouth in this way, but, because we can't see her eyes very clearly, the picture doesn't make her look as happy as it might have done. Also, the patterns behind her are a bit of a distraction. The use of color might have helped to separate out the different elements! But nevertheless this was a very good idea for a picture.
Good luck with the City & Guilds course. For ideas of what to photograph in Huntingdonshire, you might like to have a look at local picture books, or there's a Huntingdon & District website at:
http://www.huntsdc.gov.uk/. Or you might even get some ideas from my local page on St Ives!

"Please find attached four photos for your comment. The first is a lake in Norway, where I was trying to capture the snow and the sky, and the reflection in the water.
The second photo is of 'my backyard' as I call it - the beach where I live, which is on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia. I was trying to show the heat and colour of summer.
The 3rd is of a storm at the same beach. I was trying to show the threatening mood of the sky.
The last is taken at Niagara Falls in the winter, showing the eerie frozen trees and lights. The building in the background is the Tourist Centre and restaurant. The falls are hidden on the left, with only the mist from them showing against the sky. While under-exposed, I felt it captured the feel of the place in winter, which is so different to the photos I have seen of it in summer.
Hope these are of interest to you. Kind regards." (Rose Devore)

Lake in Norway
Lake cropped
Your photo (on the left) shows a very attractive scene, but as the mountain comes so near the middle of the picture, it's not immediately obvious just where you want us to look, so, on the right, I've tried cutting out the less interesting part of the sky. I think I prefer this version.

Beach
A very effective photo, but I wonder if it might it have been even more interesting if someone had been included, perhaps walking into the picture from the right? I like the foreground, especially the flowers, and find the coloring most attractive.
Storm
A dramatic picture, but, if you'd swung the camera down just a little, you could have shown more of the foreground (and of that interesting looking red plant on the right), and also avoid having the sea right along the middle of the picture.
Niagara
Niagara cropped
Your photo (on the left) is highly original and effective as it is, but I've tried to make it even more arresting (on the right) by moving in just a bit closer. This loses some of the mist, which is something you may not want to do, but there's not really much to see there anyway.
I think these make a really pleasing set of photos.

Reply from Rose Devore: "Thank you for your comments, they were very helpful. I am presently using a Minolta instamatic camera, and am hoping to move up to an SLR. I'm dying to try out all the special effects and filters that the other photographers mention. Thanks for your encouragement. Kind regards, Rose Devore."
