"Hi, I've been interested in photography for about two years. I have not gone to school, or even gotten my self a good camera yet. As of right now, I just use my sony hanycam to put my favorite images on the net. I have also take plenty of pictures with a Vivitar camera that I got for my birthday. Just recently, a good friend offered his advise on my pics. His opinion was that the subjects I choose for my pics are "ordinary". That a baby's smile, and pretty clouds are everyday things. I agree with him to some extend. I understand that originality is important, especially if a person expects to make money with his/her pictures. But on the other hand, isn't photography supposed to be about capturing a moment, something beautiful, or not so beautiful, no matter what the subject is? Everyday or not? I would like to hear what you think about this. Thanks for your time" (Leah)

You can still be original in the way you photograph babies or clouds! It's entirely up to you what you photograph. What matters is the way you do it.

Baby multiplied
I find this just a bit alarming because of all those distorted faces in the background. Perhaps it would have been better if you'd shown the baby with a whole lot of different expressions rather put so much emphasis on the miserable one!
Witch cropped
Witch
This is a fun picture on the left, but move in closer, as on the right, and you concentrate attention more on the girl and less on the leaves.

Boy
A nice soulful expression, but I'd have liked to have seen what he is doing more clearly. Or, if you wanted to show us the mess on his face, a lower camera angle would have helped.

Boy with whistle cropped
Boy blowing whistle
Another good idea on the left, but to emphasise the whistle blowing, I'd be inclined to come in closer for a really bold close-up , as on the right. If you'd pulled up the helmet a bit, you'd needn't have lost his eyes in shadow.

These are a really lively collection of pictures. And they really are original!

"Hi! About three weeks ago I purchased my first slr (pentax zx-m) camera, and I love it. I have a few of pics I'd like you to look at. They are sunrise pictures. One is of a foggy morning (of course) at my house and the other is of the Huron River in Michigan. Let me know what you think. Thanks so much." (Tracie Kalliainen, ps-I am from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. :))

Sunrise
A fine dramatic photo. Perhaps some foreground interest might have added depth to the picture, but it works well as it is.
Sunrise 2
This is much less interesting as it isn't immediately obvious just what it is that we are looking at. If there had to be such large black areas, it would have been better if you could have shown some detail in them.

Reply from Tracie Kalliainen: "Thank you very much for the critique and the swift response!!"
