"I love taking photos of insects, is there anything you can advice me to improve my pictures. I am confined to a wheelchair and taking these pictures is a great hobbie for me. Regards." (Kevin Moyes)

Both these photos are really eyecatching. I particularly like the dramatic flower pattern on the right. However, the butterfly (on the left) gets just a bit lost in such a detailed and colorful background; ideally, it would have better if the butterfly had been pin sharp but with the background thrown at least slightly out of focus. This might have involved focusing just this side of the butterfly - probably a lot easier said than done! With the photo on the right, the flower seems sharper than the bees - a pity because they too really need to be absolutely sharp.

You've certainly got a good eye for a subject! The only problem is that your picture (on the left) is just a little too dark. I've lightened it on the right. A bit of sunlight on the web might have brought its pattern out more clearly. But these really are an interesting set of pictures. "Greetings, I love your web site "Take Better Photos" and I have picked up some very practical advice . Thank for displaying such as helpful information. You not only have gift for photography but one for designing web sites as well. I wish I had seen the information BEFORE I took the photo I have enclosed. I am a U.S. citizen living in Inchon, South Korea. This picture was taken with a Cannon AT-1 400 asa during the monsoon season. I was trying to capture the how hard it was raining. I took it from inside a local fast food place. I kick my self everytime I see this photo. I was surprised to see bottom of the window in the photo. I have seen you work magic, but I realized you may not be the miracle worker. IS there any chance saving this photo and making it better? I have tried some graphic software programs, but can't do much with it.Thanks for any advice you may have...." (Nicolas Cramer)

Your photo (on the left) would probably be improved, as on the right, by cropping out the window, and by reducing the "lean" of the lamp posts, concentrating on the most prominent one on the left to get it more vertical. To show how hard it was raining, something like overflowing gutters in the foreground might have added to the effect. "Hello I'm a beginner and just got my first "real" camera. I haven't quite gotten the hang of it. It's a Pentax ZX-30. I'm submitting one photo. Let me know what you think and what I could do to make it better. Thank you." (Dawn)

| I'm not sure whether I'm meant to be looking at the rose or the wooden object (which I can't identify). The result is a rather muddled picture. If it's the rose you are most interested in, it would have been better to have gone for a simpler and less distracting background, A natural background is often the most effective. (If the rose had really been outdoors, the sunshine might have made it look more attractive with attractive dappled patterns, especially if you'd experimented with some side lighting.) But I quite like the grain on the wood in your version - perhaps there's a separate picture here somewhere! | ||||||||||||||||||
