"Hi, I am a begginer at photography and have always enjoyed taking photos. Recently I have bought myself a Sony DSC-S30 digital camera. I am experimenting with Portrait type work at the moment with this camera. I am using two simple Hologen work lights for extra lighting and home made back drops. I have made an adapter for the 37mm lens that will support using special effect filters. I haven't been able to find any in 37mm size for this camera exept the standard UV filters. I am trying to achive a quality photo without the use of PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro which I have. I rather learn to get the photo quality right the first attempt, then touch up any errors with PS or PSP. These three photos were taken of my wife with just a softening filter. There are NO computer generated corrections to these photos. I have only cropped them to gain the look I thought that was right for the image. Thanks," (Randy B.)

Portrait 2
I'm very impressed by the photo on the left. I prefer it to the one on the right where the woman's arm partly obscures her face and she doesn't look any too comfortable. The black background is effective in both pictures, as is the lighting. The difficult thing is to catch the exact expression you want, and the quizzical look in the photo on the left seems to me to be just right.

Portrait 2
There seems rather a lot of empty space around the top left of this photo, and it's a pity that the face is out of focus - or was this a deliberate soft focus effect? If so, I don't think it was a very good idea, because the eye searches for the sharpest part of the picture and this turns out to be the buttons. Surely you didn't mean the emphasis to be here? This sort of pose is very difficult to bring off, and I find the composition (with the leg so close to the camera and the face so far away) a bit awkward. It almost looks as if she's falling off the chair!

Hello; Maybe there are some criticism's that will give guidance to improved photos. Any will be appreciated. Thank you." (Stephen Garrett, http://www.presys.com/garrett/images.htm)

Two dogs Dad
Man amended
I selected 4 pictures from your page. I think the large photos above are the most effective because of their human interest, but is the man sucking a matchstick, or is this a blemish on the print that should be removed? This slight ambiguity is caused by the fact that the background is sharper than he is, so you can't see him quite clearly enough. I've experimented on the right by simplifying the background, removing the "stick" and the shiny spot on his nose, and reducing the glare on his glasses.

Boat
Scenic view
These are much more run-of-the-mill pictures. I don't think the lens flare really adds to the scenic view as we don't see the actual sun, and a more dramatic angle looking up at the boat (or seeing it through the rigging of another boat) might have made it more appealing. I much prefer your more arresting images (especially that of the dogs).
