"Hello, I have recently taken up photography and was surfing the net for tips when I came across your website. It would be helpful to receive your comments on the three photos that I have attached: Sunset1 - taken over Rhein in Bonn, warne-lighthouse : taken in Warnemünde, north Germany, Venice4 - taken from a bridge on the island of Lido near Venice. I have also posted a number of photographs at http://photos.yahoo.com/hansonkg - if you can spare some extra time could also have a look a give your opinion about them? I look forward to receiving your suggestions to improve my photography. Thank you." (Hanson K.G. India)

I find this both unusual and highly effective, with the colors being particularly pleasing, even if I can't help wishing there was some way in which you could have included a closer view of the lighthouse, without losing too much of the setting!

Sunset
Once again, you've produced an arresting picture (on the left). As so much of the interest was on the bottom left corner, I tried concentrating on this part of the scene (on the right). I think I prefer this composition, but I'm afraid it does show up the fact that the picture isn't quite as sharp as it might have been.

Venice Lido alternative
Venice Lido
A picturesque scene (on the left) with the bridge right in the middle of the background to emphasise the symmetry. On the right, though, I've tried moving the bridge off-centre, as I think this makes the picture a bit less bland. It's all a matter of taste, but I find this more interesting.

Lotus

I've taken just one picture from your page: the botanical garden in Stuttgart (on the left). I like this one too, but I've tried moving in for a closer view of the lotus (on the right). This would have worked better, though, if the flower had been just a bit more colorful! But, for someone who has recently taken up photography, all this is an extremely good start. Congratulations.

Reply from K. G. Hanson: "Thank you for your comments and perspectives and also for going through the photos that I have posted in my album. From your comments I feel that you recommend that I should move in closer to the subject to get a better picture. One more request though - based on my photos you have seen could you please let me know what I should avoid doing and which aspects I should improve on? Thank you once again."

The key thing is to communicate what excites you most about a scene, choosing the most effective camera position you can find to ensure that we can see it really clearly!
