"I've been wading through the advice you give to everyone and thought that I could do with a little. I've been taking pictures for 6 months with a Canon EOS 50e and either a 28-80 or 100-300 lens. This shot was taken on top of Howth Head (Ireland) looking out to sea with the lens right in at 80. Camera set to about 125 x 5.6. Oh and it's my wife, I quite like the shot but she doesn't !!" (Matt Lemon)

I like this photo too! It is very well composed, but I'm not sure about the sunglasses. If the picture is really meant as a portrait of your wife, it would be better to see her eyes. To justify the sunglasses, perhaps we need to see a bit more of the scene she is looking at. But it's a fine photo, even if your name down the right hand side is a bit of a distraction!

"Here is a pic I took on my digital camera not a good camera but I think its got something about it, or is it me?" (Tim Pace)

Fairground ride
Yes, this is an interesting and dramatic picture, but I'm not certain whether I'm meant to be looking at the dark sky or the figure having the ride so ....

Closer view
Intersection of thirds
... I've moved in closer so as to concentrate attention on the person having the ride. The most interesting positioning for him is probably not at the centre of the picture as in the original, but to one side. Here I've positioned him at one of the famous "intersection of thirds", as shown by the lines on the picture on the right.

"Hi, Just checked out your web site and thought that I would like to e-mail you some photos to look at. The first one is Max the dog, and a picture of a boat going in for the day in Cape Hatteras, NC. Do you have any advice on taking pictures at sunset, I really like taking them. The first photo was take with a Canon EOS Rebel 2000(that I just got), the second with a 15 year old 15 dollar vivitar (I can't believe this point and shoot still works). Thanks," (Dain Neater)

Closer view of dog
Dog
This is a really difficult subject as the dog's face is so easily lost in black, as has happened slightly in your photo on the left. On the right, I've not only come in closer, but lightened the picture a bit so that we can (just) see the dog's eyes. You could have achieved a similar effect by using some sort of reflector (perhaps a white cloth or even a newspaper held up so that it lightened up the face).

Sunset and boat
Sunset and boat closer
It's amazing what you've achieved (on the left) with such a cheap camera, although it does look as if the boat is making its way slightly uphill! On the right, I've straightened the horizon, removed the dark bits at the outer edges, and positioned the sun at the intersection of thirds (see above for an explanation of this).
