| A dramatic picture that works very well. It was a very good idea to include the silhoutted trees in the foreground. | ||||||||||||||||

A spectacular display, but we are possibly a bit far away to see it really clearly.. | |||||||||||||||

| Your view on the left is also rather distant. An alternative would be to come in closer, as on the right, to emphasise what seem to be the most interesting parts of the scene. |
||||||||||||||||
| Another impressive night scene. Once again it is the silhoutted foreground that make this so appealing. You really are an experienced photographer! | ||||||||||||||||

Reply from Ricci Pinto: "Unfortunately,I did not caption the photographs I sent in. The 1st one was taken in Northern Borneo late one evening at a yacht club in Kota Kinabalu. The fireworks one was taken in Sydney Harbour's waterfront to welcome the start of the New Millennium. I was using a Canon EOS 100 coupled with a Tamron 28mm-200mm zoom,mounted on tripod weighted down with my sturdy Tamrac photo-bag that has been the best investment I ever made in photographic equipment even though as a US import it cost me a fortune. I did take a close-up as you have done,but instead sent you a shot that was taken at a fairly wide angle to capture the whole scene for the friends I made on that particular night who were photographing the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the fireworks with compact and APS cameras with their flashguns popping away merrily. I am really pleased that you liked the lighthoused sunset.That was taken in the most North-Western tip of North Wales,UK,at a place called the South Stack light-house. I must admit that I took several frames so as to capture the lighthouse's beacon as it came round to my vantage point. I would be grateful if you could run your critical eye on some more shots I am attaching herewith. Once again,thanks for your reply and your critique. Captions/details to go with the shots all taken with EOS100+ Tamron 28mm-200mm: (1) Sydney's famous Opera House silhouetted against an evening sky that was perfect because of the cloud overhang.Taken from a cruise-boat. Monopod used. f8/400 ISO film. (2) Sydney's business centre skyline taken in late evening. Tripod used.f8 400 ISO film. (3) Landscape of North Wales, UK taken one summer's day. Handheld at f16 400 ISO film. (4) Headquarter Church of the Latter-Day Saints in Kansas City. Handheld. I liked the way the clouds streaked just above the spire. f16/100 ISO Fuji Reala which I like to use for it deep rich color rendition. Hope the accompanying information is of use. Thank you. Regards." |

| This is my favourite of these four photos. The imaginative placing of the opera house at the bottom of the picture adds to the effect, and the clouds provide a really dramatic background. | ||||||||||||||||

| This seems much more run-of-the-mill. The buildings are rather awkwardly situated halfway up the picture, there aren't enough leaves to provide much foreground interest, and the lit buildings don't seem quite in focus! | ||||||||||||||||

| This is a pleasant enough scene, but the few leaves provide even less foreground framing, and there seems no particular centre of interest. | ||||||||||||||||

| The church seems to be slipping down out of the picture! You don't really know whether you are meant to be looking at it or the sky. The streaks in the sky might be more noticeable if the left hand edge of the picture (where there are no streaks) were removed. | ||||||||||||||||

"This photo was taken at the zoo. What do you think of it? And how can i improve it?" (Leanne) |

| An attractive photo. The giraffe stands out clearly from the background, and the foreground is really colorful. I'd be inclined to cut off just a little bit from the very top of the picture so that all our attention is concentrated on the giraffe. But it's a pleasing picture. | ||||||||||||||||
